After our recent series of “company-specific interview question articles”On the hiring of power plants Costco, Walmart, and Target, what better job description to break down than that of the the cashier.

Cashiers are obviously very important to the three companies mentioned, but I think they have recently gained new respect. I am writing this article during the Covid-19 outbreak and unlike many of us crouching indoors, cashiers are on the front line, still working, providing services to us and really putting ourselves in danger. . This is really something everyone should consider the next time you interact with a cashier at your local grocery store 🙂

Due to all this situation, cashiers are in high demand across the country when it comes to hiring. So I thought it would be helpful to provide this detailed cashier job description to help anyone interested in this career path.

What is a cashier?

You are probably generally familiar with what a cashier is. The main role of a cashier is to assist customers with the in-store payment process. This can include collecting payment, scanning items, bagging, delivering appropriate change and more.

Cashiers can be found in a wide variety of establishments, including grocery stores, big box stores, gas stations, restaurants, retail stores and more.

Let’s take a look in detail at their various duties and responsibilities, as there are a few that you might not be aware of …

Tasks and responsibilities of the cashier

Here are some of the main tasks and responsibilities that you will need to take on:

      • Manage payments (cash, debit, credit cards, checks)
      • Scan items
      • Price controls
      • Make sure there is enough cash in the cash register before the shift (as well as the correct amount)
      • Return correct change, receipts, refunds (sometimes refunds will be issued at a customer service desk rather than the cashier)
      • Bag items
      • Cross-sell, sell new products
      • Answer all customer questions (requires in-depth knowledge of the different items in store)
      • Process coupons
      • Manage discount cards
      • Check the identification documents on certain items such as alcohol and cigarettes
      • Keep a register of transactions
      • Maintain a clean and tidy checkout area
      • Return items not purchased to the shelves
      • Sometimes you will be asked to help in the store (i.e. storage shelves, price checking, cleaning, etc.)
      • Help customers sign up for reward point programs / cards

Obviously, different stores will vary in terms of the duties and responsibilities required, be sure to review your cashier job description for the exact details of what you will be doing. (This is important to do for your job interview, as we’ll see later.)

Good skills to have

If you want to become a good cashier, you will need a number of skills. The most obvious that comes to mind is excellent customer service skills. After all, a cashier is often the primary employee who interfaces with the customer.

It’s more important to employers than many people realize. Think about it, a cashier is often the “face” of the business that buyers / customers will remember. This is why some companies are very careful about hiring the right kind of person as a cashier. Let’s take a look at some other great cashier skills to have:

      • Customer service
      • Basic Math (Counting change may require quick addition and subtraction!)
      • Personal skills
      • Sales and Marketing
      • Point of sale system
      • Price scanners
      • Efficiency
      • Ability to remain calm under pressure
      • Friendliness (important as the “face” of the company)
      • Management of time
      • Product knowledge
      • Conflict resolution
      • Patience
      • Listening ability
      • Attention to detail
      • Positive attitude

Cashier’s salary

You probably won’t be surprised that cashiers aren’t on top when it comes to pay!

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics: “The median hourly wage for cashiers was $ 10.78… The median wage is the wage at which half of workers in an occupation earned more than this amount and the other half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $ 8.49 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $ 14.47. “

There is a slight variance depending on where you work as a cashier. Generally speaking, you can earn more by working as a cashier in pharmacies and drugstores:

Education, training and experience

One of the factors that makes becoming a cashier attractive to part-time work is the fact that you need little or no education or training to pursue it.

Generally speaking, employers will be looking for a high school diploma. You will be trained on the job, although having some cashier experience will obviously improve your chances.

Employment prospects

This is an important section because, although cashiers are currently in demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in the long term cashiers will experience a decline in job growth.

The main culprit? Technological advances such as self-service kiosks and online sales will hamper job growth as you can see from this table:

How to effectively use the job description for your interview

Before you jump into your cashier interview, there are a few things to remember that can really set you apart from all the other employees.

The job description lists the skills and qualities that the recruiting company is looking for in its ideal candidate. It’s your job to make sure that you demonstrate that you have these skills during the job interview.

As we’ve discussed in this article, the skills and qualities that businesses often look for in a cashier will most likely include (but not be limited to) Customer service, attention to detail, personal skills and a positive attitude. You should therefore begin your interview by having prepared answers that clearly show that you demonstrate these qualities.

Take the skills and qualities you find in your specific cashier job description (which you have), then craft great answers to interview questions that highlight those skills.

JEFF’S TIP: Here is the thing. The vast majority of people who show up for an interview for a cashier position will literally do no real preparation. They will not do any research on the company and they will barely skim over the job description. It’s a real opportunity for you to do the opposite and really stand out from the crowd!

Put it all together

Cashiers are the face of many of our favorite stores across the country and are a great option for a part time job or a longer term career!

Make sure you don’t underestimate the value of the job description when preparing for your interview. If you don’t, you’ll be miles ahead of the competition.
